By far the busiest municipal court in the state, Seattle Municipal Court processes close to 20,000 cases per year, ranging from simple traffic infractions to misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors. There are currently eight sitting judges that preside over criminal matters, including DUI, in this court. These positions are up for election once every four years. Additionally, cases may be heard before appointed court commissioners as well as pro tempore judges who occasionally fill in for the sitting judges for a variety of reasons.

DUI cases filed into Seattle Municipal Court are prosecuted by the criminal division of the Seattle City Attorney’s Office. With over 90 attorneys at its disposal, this office oversees the handling of all matters filed into this court from traffic tickets to criminal prosecutions. It also handles all appeals originating from decisions made in Seattle Municipal Court.
